About us

Drumscrib is a one-person team, for now.

My name is Morgan Chabaud, I am a French software robotics engineer, specialized in machine learning. I play drums as a hobby and although I played a few small concerts when younger, my passion lies in trying to make 'intelligent' software. Everyone who has transcribed drum parts knows that it can be very quick for repetitive and slow songs, but it can take hours for more complex songs. I used to transcribe the songs I wanted to play on paper, but nowadays, I just want to spend an hour playing drums instead of manually transcribing. Unfortunately, finding quality drum sheet music is quite a challenge, if possible at all. That is why I decided to solve this issue by making a software that would do it automatically!

A few months ago... well, time flies — it was actually in February 2022 that I decided to develop an automatic transcription software for drums. At first, I searched for previous attempts or research papers on the matter and I was intrigued as to why there was so little research on the topic... "A quick one-month development" I said to myself... In the end, it isn't that easy but all things considered, it's not that hard either. There are just a lot of small pieces that, all together, make it work. However, it still doesn't work quite as often or as accurately as I want it to, that is why it is in beta.

Almost a year of research and development... Who made it possible? My lovely family for their support and my loyal ten-year-old laptop. That's it, no team, no sponsor, and no other financing plan, and I'm probably a bad 'entrepreneur' because of it. Apart from not having an income, I cannot pay anyone to help me out making Drumscrib perfect, so it takes all my time, every single day. However, don't get me wrong, it would not be possible without public research papers, open-source software, and public forums.

Here we are, Drumscrib is in beta. Now, while I keep working full-time to reach a proper transcription quality, meaning on par with — or better than — what a human can do for any audio containing drums, everyone can start enjoying automatic transcriptions. Although not always great, when the service improves, you'll be able to get the improved transcriptions you already bought at no additional cost. When it works without issues, it can already be really useful to start playing on new songs, and you directly support the development.
